In her On the Run series, artist Judy Larson focuses on animals that either find, or have found, themselves in dire circumstances. The Defiant is inspired by a heartbreaking chapter in history.

"The year was 1858, and several companies of soldiers under the leadership of Colonel George Wright were engaged in a punitive military expedition against the Native American tribes, Yakama, Spokane, Palouse and Coeur d'Alene," explains Judy Larson. "On the morning of September 8, Colonel Wright and his troops spotted a large cloud of dust which revealed the position of 800 Palouse horses. Although a valiant effort was made by the tribes to drive their horses into the mountains, after a fierce skirmish, the majority of the herd was captured. Although it was a crime to kill a horse on the frontier, it was Wright's job to subdue the tribes' powerful hold over their land and to demoralize them. It took the better part of two days to shoot, club and kill all the horses and, as the Native Americans watched helplessly from the hills, they could not believe what they saw. Today, along the banks of the Spokane River, a monument marks the site that became known as Horse Slaughter Camp."

"In my search for interesting people to paint, I came to know this gentleman named Mickey Michele," says Morgan Weistling. "He is a fifth generation Californian whose great, great grandfather was a vaquero and horse trainer in 1890s Los Angeles. The art of horse training has been passed down from generation to generation and he follows in the footsteps of his grandfather. Mickey trains horses for mounted shooting and is an expert in firearms of the old West. I have painted him with his "Trusted Friends" that have served him so well, and I purposely used a rough textured painting style to convey his personality."

Mother and Child Experience the Excitement and Happiness of a New Friend and Home.

This is the first of seven in "An American Portrait". We embark on a journey through the life of a young American boy and his family. As we step into the world Terry Redlin has created for them, we are aware that the paintings are compilations of experiences many of us have shared. The story begins with the American dream of home ownership. Today, this young family is moving from the farm into town. They purchased a "fixer-upper". The old house needs some tender love and care' but for now, it is moving day. As they unpack the truck, they are filled with promise. This is the beginning of a whole new life for them and for their young son. Reflecting back on his own childhood, Terry Redlin remembers moving to town before first grade. In the cover scene, the young boy has a great surprise. He has just met his first friend, "Buddy". Terry remembers getting a dog after he moved to town, as well. "My dog was an orphan my parents found. I named him Bootsie because he had four dark paws. Bootsie was my first friend." The family is proud to have a place to call their own. We can sense the pride they feel. To watch their young son experience the unconditional love of the puppy fills their hearts with joy and makes moving day a little less traumatic for everyone.
